Mrs. Martha Ellen McCarley was born in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana December 29, 1856 and died in Nocona June 29, 1922. She married S. A. McCarley, who survives here, in 1873 and they came to Texas, landing at Tyler where they lived many years. She joined the Baptist Church in 1873 and was a faithful member for 49 years. She was the mother of nine children: Mrs. J. M. Yates, who died at Sweetwater, Texas in 1904; Mrs. J. M. Roberts of Charley, Texas; Mrs. W. T. Rolls of Decatur; Mrs. Earl Broocke, Mrs. Lee Miller, E. E. McCarley, Aubra McCarley, and B. J. McCarley of Nocona. She has two living sisters, Mrs. L. E. Roberson of Lamar, Oklahoma and Mrs. H. C. Splawn of Oakland, Oklahoma, all were at her bedside when death came. She has 27 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The family moved to Nocona in 1895 where she was well known.
